Double jointed yoga

Post by Bernie »

The term "double jointed" is really a misnomer. There is no such thing: each joint is one joint, not two. For example, the elbow joint is one hinge, not two separate joints. What you may be asking is - can someone who is hyperflexible in her joints benefit from Yin Yoga? Hyperflexible people look to be "double jointed" but really just have a greater than normal range of motion.

To be able to answer your question completely, I would need to know what the degree of hyperflexibity is, and the probable cause. Greater than normal flexibility can come from the shape of your bones or it may come from damage to the joint, atrophy of the joint capsule, some connective tissue deformity, lax ligaments, weak muscles or many other causes. Yin Yoga can help with some of these problems, but not with all of them. Some causes may be untreatable, and sometimes hyperflexibility is perfectly fine and doesn't need to be treated.

Do you have a specific situation you are concerned about?
