Yin yoga only for hips, pelvis and lower back?

Post by Mieke »

I've read that yin yoga is mostly used to improve the mobility in the hips, pelvis and lower back. Most of the sequences I find are also focused on these areas. How come? Thanks for your answer. Mieke

Traditionally, yin yoga targets the area between the navel to the knees (to quote Paul Grilley). This makes sense as this area shrink-wraps the most as we get older and its stiffer in older people than in the young. The upper body, by contrast, can stay quite mobile in comparison. However, this does not mean that we can’t also apply yin yoga techniques to other areas. See these articles for yin yoga for the upper body: it can be done while the lower body is also marinating in yin-mode. Since the upper body is not as strong or deep as the lower body joints, when doing yin yoga there, we don’t have to hold the poses as long: maybe 2~4 minutes is okay (depending upon the student of course.)

Cheers
