yin asanas / practice for dislocated hip

Post by chuckiem56 »

A fellow yogi, who suffers occasionally from an old hip dislocation issue, is looking for guidance for practice when this old injury flairs up. Any suggestions?

Old hip injury

Post by Bernie »

Can you be more specific about the "old hip dislocation issue"? How did you hurt your hip, what type of dislocation was it, what does the pain feel like and where exactly is the pain? How does it re-occur and how often?

Generally, there are two possible causes of pain and injury: overuse and underuse. Which case do you think applies to you? Once you have given us a bit more to work with, we can maybe narrow down some possible practices that might help.

Cheers

more information re hip

Post by chuckiem56 »

I have more information regarding this question.
The discomfort presents in the anterior portion of the right hip as stiffness, and then a pop when abducting the leg. Also as tightness when drawing the knee to the chest. The original injury is 10+ years ago.

Any suggestions on how to proceed with practice now that the acute pain has subsided? And how to keep the hip healthy?

Thank you

remote diagnosis impossible

I am afraid that is not enough to go on: your friend really should see a specialist who can exam him directly. What was the old injury? Is there pain with any of these movements? A physiotherapist would be able to move the leg and feel the areas of resistance directly and thus work out what was really going on. It is ligament damage? Is it muscular tightness? Is there damage to the joint? Is there inflammation and swelling?

What I can suggest is - first find out what is going on, then work out what to do. Mobilization and stabilization are both important: flexibility and strength. But you need to know where the problem really lies: is the stiffness you mention due to inflammation, or tightness in the muscles or tightness in the joint capsule or ? Depending on the cause, the treatment will vary.

The popping sound when the leg is abducted could be worriesome, or it may just be a tendon getting caught up in other tissues and releasing when the leg is moved, making a clicking sound just as snapping your fingers makes a sound.

Again, best bet - have your friend see a specialist and then go from there.
Good luck!

I'm new to this forum and came across this topic and felt like putting in my thoughts too. I'll ask you friend or anyone in this situation to consider going to a professional. I'm not saying it for the sake but I'm a victim of a bad backbone dislocation and I tried to make it OK with the help of someone I knew. He was not a professional but knew something about bones and all. That decision ended up in 5 months of treatment in a hospital and I could barely move from the bed. I had a correction operation and then 2 months physio at a center in Markham. Or, you can go get the help of professional physiotherapy too. They will be knowing more about the bones and muscles, their alignment, movement etc. Have a check up with the professionals, and never ever try to resolve such issues yourself or with the help of your friend.
