Yin Yoga for peritoneal serous cancer

I was recently asked the following: Good morning, Bernie. A long time fan of yours. I am now in hospice but would dearly love to continue my yoga. My cancer is in the stomach so I have a lot of up and down swelling and knobbly areas: Serous Peritoneal Cancer. I wonder if you could offer some range o...

Re: Yin Yoga for Teens

Hi Joy&Yin I don't think there is any inherent danger to teaching Yin Yoga to teens than any other population, as long as you remember the reality of human variations. There are always going to be some people at whatever age who won't do well with Yin Yoga, but I think it is a very small percentage....

Re: Warm up before yin?

I have written about whether we have to be warmed up or should be cooled off before our yin yoga practices elsewhere. You can check here and here . In short, my view is — it depends! It depends upon your intentions. Which tissues are you targeting? If you want to target the serial tissues, do your p...

Re: Article about yin yoga's "controversial" claims about targeting the fascia

Thanks for letting me know about this post. I have read Andrew and Matthew's book Physiology of Yoga and found it very good, like Jenny did. And like you, I too respect Jenny and her work. However, this does not mean that I agree with everything in their book. I won't comment on the full article, bu...

Re: L-4 nerve

Hi Jennifer I am sorry to hear that your student is suffering. To clarify your question, may I assume that you are referring to a diagnosis where a nerve root exiting the spine near L4 is being compressed causing symptoms (pain, numbness, tingling, etc.) through the buttocks and down the legs? If so...

Re: The square pose

Hi Anna Some people love Square Pose, but I am not one of them. My hips can not externally rotate enough to comfortably put my foot on the opposite knee. I feel the torsion in my knees. So, if I want to do Square Pose, I do the “loose” version which is basically sitting cross-legged with my knees wi...

Re: Interaction between 50hr online YYTT and Meditation Revealed

Hi Rhyn Yours is a good question. The quick answer is, Meditation Revealed does not require you to have taken the Yin Yoga Teacher Training course. While I do consider it a continuation of that training, Meditation Revealed stands on its own as a separate course. Many people who take Meditation Reve...

Re: Cell signal from the immune system affecting the myofascia

Yes, it is called transforming growth factor beta 1 or TGFB1. You can read a bit more about in Robert Schleip's writings or research, such as this 2020 study called Manipulation of the Fascial System Applied During Acute Inflammation of the Connective Tissue of the Thoracolumbar Region Affects Trans...

Re: Fascia upper and lower body

Hi Anna I am not sure what these people mean by "more fascia". Do they mean more by weight? Of course the legs are bigger and heavier than the arms, so naturally they would have more fascia by weight. Do they mean by layers? I have not heard anything about the arms having few layers of fascia than t...

Re: Sinew channels

Well, this does seem to be a new bone of contention in the yin world, so I will share my two cents worth of opinion. The Sinew channels are superficial, broad channels that follow the muscles, tendons and ligaments (fascia!) They are very similar to Thom Myers myofascial meridians. They are conduits...

Re: Integrating philosophy in the yin poses

Hi Renée. Interesting topic. Certainly many Yin Yoga teachers give insights to yoga philosophy and life while the students are in the postures. Sarah Powers is an articulate master of this: her classes are like dharma talks. Paul Grilley’s elocution focuses more on anatomy, but he also shares some p...

Re: Yin and Golf

Thanks for those recommendations, Zeke. As to sequencing a class, remember strength and mobility...so anything that can build core strength and upper body mobility will be good. Stuart McGill's Big 3 Exercises are a must. Then, some bouncing fitness for a minute or two will help to build the elastic...
