The Two Biggest Challenges in Yoga Today

"Students should never do Pigeon Pose!"
True or False?

Frequently I receive emails or postings from yoga teachers and students asking for an opinion about some other teacher's statement that a certain yoga pose is really harmful for students and should never be taught, or certain movements of the body in a yoga class should be outlawed. Dogma is dangerous! To say that something is always wrong or something should never be done feeds into fear and at best is unhelpful and at worst is harmful. There are two big reasons why some teachers will render these prejudicial statements:

1 - A common misperception about the nature
      and value of stress
2 - Ignorance of skeletal variations

To investigate how these deficiencies manifest in a yoga class and why they are not serving students well, read on.

Fascia News

3rd International Fascia Conference Notes from the 3rd International Fascia Research Conference,
held in Vancouver, B.C. in March of 2012.

A few months ago I had the chance to attend a conference all about fascia. As you know, fascia is fascinating, especially if you are interested in understanding why yoga is so healing and healthy for us. I thought I would share some of my notes from the conference and especially some speculations that arose in my mind listening to all these experts. These speculations range from the potential benefits of doing Yin Yoga in a hot environment to wondering if backbend are really advisable for pregnant students. If you would like to comment on these speculations and eavesdrop on my thoughts, read on!

Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings

Yin is In! And, it is growing in popularity. Yin Yoga has been with us since the beginning of Hatha Yoga centuries ago. But since the early 19th century, yoga has become more and more yang-like in nature. Everything requires balance: yin completes yang. Yin Yoga is the balancing practice for the more active, muscular yang yogas. There are more and more teachers offering Yin Yoga today, and more workshops and opportunities to learn how to become a Yin Yoga teacher. If diving deeper into the yin-side of life is on your bucket list, there are lots of opportunities for you.
