Newer Approaches

Dr. Bush describes more recent advancements in this whole field that come very close to what we have been investigating in Eastern metaphysics. These approaches, which arose in the 1990s, include
  1. Mindfulness Meditation
  2. Acceptance and Commitment therapy
The typical goal of these approaches is to become less affected by our thoughts, by any sensations or events, or by our mental fantasies and imaginings. Included in the second approach is a holding true to our personal values in all we do and think. The methods are very similar to meditation techniques, which we will investigate in the section Meditation on Energy.

The typical approach to cognitive behavior therapy includes observing and changing the way we react to situations, our thoughts about these situations, and the emotions that arise. One powerful tool to use to do this is "recording thoughts."
