Betsy Andrade Chandler, Arizona
I was first introduced to the practice of Yin Yoga in 2001 when
attending a workshop on yin yoga with Jeff Martens. The following
year I met Paul Grilley through the Yoga Vision Conference in
Tempe, and have attended a workshop with Paul at every opportunity
since that time. I have been fortunate that my studio has offered a
variety of yin yoga classes since that initial introduction in 2001,
and I have studied consistently with Kat Myers, Aaron Goldberg and
Jeff Martens throughout that time. In 2004 I was offered the
opportunity to begin teaching yin yoga classes at Inner Vision Yoga
in Chandler, Arizona.
The practice of yin yoga drew me in with its wonderful hip-opening
and lower back-strengthening poses -- areas of my body that need its
nurturing attention. Once involved in the practice, I became aware
of the delightful meditative and contemplative quality of the slow,
deep movements, which speak to my soul as much as to my body. It is
my priviledge and pleasure to be a yin yoga instructor, and offer
this beautiful practice to my students.

Jean Friendly Larkspur, California
Jean Friendly has been practicing meditation and energy work since 1991. Since 2001, her active asana practice
has been based on Ashtanga, as taught by John Berlinsky and Lea Watkins, and it has been complemented with a
Yin path, introduced to her by Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley. Since completing her yoga teacher training
with Sarah and Paul, Jean has continued her studies with many distinguished teachers, most notable being
Ashtanga founder, Pattabhi Jois, Iyengar masters Ramanand Patel and Kofi Busia, and spiritual teacher Adyashanti.
Jean's teaching style synthesizes all these influences – bringing awareness of energetic flow and core grounding
to expand a student’s sense of physical presence in each moment. Each class is an invitation to remember. An
invitation to awaken into the moment - into the truth of what is.

Scott Miller Riverside, California
Scott Miller began practicing yoga from a book at age twelve. Along with asana and meditation instruction, the
book Be Here Now included the teachings of Neem Korali Baba. His message about experiencing life as a loving,
present moment engagement is what continues to inspire Scott to this day. It was the inspiration behind opening
Inland Yoga Centers, and it continues to inform his personal yoga practices. The physical aspect of Scott's
practice, however, is also heavily influenced by two opposite styles:
Having connected with "Ashtanga" master Pattabhi Jois in the early Nineties, Scott later traveled to India
in order to receive more instructions from him, and though Scott teaches Ashtanga in a Neem Korali inspired,
Be Here Now, manner, he continues to honor the sequencing taught to him by Mr. Jois. But Scott also balances
the "yang" half of his personal practice, with a "yin" style yoga that he learned from Paul Grilley, and his
teacher Paulie Zink. Called "Taoist Yoga," this style connects perfectly with the Be Here Now approach, and
the connection is what inspired Scott to begin practicing and later teaching "Slow Deep Stretch." Plus, it is
these two yin and yang yogas that became the hallmark of Inland Yoga, and while the studio is now able to
offer other wonderful styles, we continue to be all about present moment balancing.

Sarah Powers San Francisco, California
Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga and Buddhism into an
integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of long held
poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with a flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga,
Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachers.
Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning
to open to our emotional blockages is paramount for preparing us to deepen and nourish insights into our
essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as

Alan Starner Fort Collins, Colorado
Alan trained with John Childers, Erich Shiffmann, Sara Powers, Paul Grilley and others while living in California.
He went through Paul Grilley's Teacher training, which included Yin Yoga and Anatomy for Yoga. Although he

deep stretching and long holds provide a meditative practice that really opens up the body and provides a
space to explore the body's inner landscapes. Alan also likes to include some functional anatomy in his
classes so people can better understand their strengths and limitations.

Jan Byrd Lexington, Kentucky
It is a great joy and honor to bring yoga to those who would not necessarily believe they could participate in this
practice, and watch the transformation that takes place in their lives, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Making yoga adaptable to every level of ability is what most inspires my teaching. A member of the “baby boomer”
generation, I am excited about sharing my passion for yoga with beginner yogis and yoginis, as well as those who
have an established practice, and especially the 50+ generation. It is not simply desirable to live a healthy,
dynamic and creative life . . . it is realistically attainable through the practice of yoga.
After completing a 200-hour teacher training program, I was certified by The Temple of Kriya Yoga to teach
yoga, and am registered with Yoga Alliance as a registered yoga teacher.

Josh Summers Boston
Josh began studying Yin Yoga in the late nineties after a long training in Iyengar yoga. He is grateful
to his teachers James Murphy, Patricia Walden, Sarah Powers, Sayadaw U Pandita and Ajahn Amaro. As his
interest in vipassana, or insight meditation, has deepened, so too has his interest in more contemplative
forms of asana practice. With a professional background as an acupuncturist and a personal passion for the
dharma, Josh fell in love with Yin Yoga as a beautiful synthesis of the two.

Joe Furman Chapel Hill, North Carolina
I started studying yoga in New York City in 1976 and I'm certified as an interdisciplinary yoga teacher.
After being introduced to yoga, I quickly learned that the practice is a personal reflection of the inner-self,
filled with energy, radiance and grace. In my teachings, I like to encourage others to project their inner-selves;
to be a calm river flowing through mountains, a sun-star bringing color to darkness, an eagle soaring smoothly
over ocean winds. Yoga helps us bring balance to the yin and yang energies of the universe and I'm honored to
help others bring this balance into their lives.

Daniel Shankin Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Daniel’s yoga resonates through the entire being of the practitioner. A fascinating, miraculous blend
of mysticism, devotion, fluid movement, and grounded shape, this yoga has the ability to appropriately
challenge any level of practitioner in a myriad of ways. His classes dedicate practices which allow one
to learn how to climb into the body, to be in the body, to compassionately embrace places of limitation,
and to celebrate places of spaciousness and vibrancy. Eschewing dogma, Daniel offers myth, poetry,
and simple principles discovered by ancient yogis so his students can explore the depths of their own
minds, and be guided, rather than force fed as they open toward deeper meaning. His teachers both too
numerous and too mysterious to name, Daniel recognizes he would have not had the opportunity to meet
any of them had it not been for the kindness extended to him by the parents who gave him birth. He
divides his time between teaching, directing Main Line Yoga School in Ardmore, Pa, practicing
Thai Massage, sitting on his mat, and opening his hips really, really wide.

MaryAnne Hägglund Richmond & Manakin-Sabot, Virginia
MaryAnne believes the practice of yoga has expanded her life in ways she never imagined. She completed the first
Yoga Source Teacher Training Program (Richmond, VA) in 2003 under the direction of Sandra Pleasants and Jennifer
Elliott and is certified with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. After studying the more Yang styles of yoga
(Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar) she was drawn to the Yin style because of its simple yet sophisticated nature and its
ability to compliment and balance our masculine and feminine sides. She is grateful to have attended workshops
presented by Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley.
MaryAnne brings humor and compassion to her classes and feels that the "real" yoga happens once we step off
the mat and into our daily lives. She incorporates Taoist, Zen and Buddhist wisdom via poetry, prose and
quiet space into her teaching style. Her hope is to inspire those who practice with her to move through the
world with an awareness that leaves it better than the way we found it. "Everything we do is sacred."

Danielle Polen
Danielle, a native of texas, initially sought out yoga as a means of recovery from recurring dance-related
