Betsy Andrade Chandler, Arizona
I was first introduced to the practice of Yin Yoga in 2001 when
attending a workshop on yin yoga with Jeff Martens. The following
year I met Paul Grilley through the Yoga Vision Conference in
Tempe, and have attended a workshop with Paul at every opportunity
since that time. I have been fortunate that my studio has offered a
variety of yin yoga classes since that initial introduction in 2001,
and I have studied consistently with Kat Myers, Aaron Goldberg and
Jeff Martens throughout that time. In 2004 I was offered the
opportunity to begin teaching yin yoga classes at Inner Vision Yoga
in Chandler, Arizona.
The practice of yin yoga drew me in with its wonderful hip-opening
and lower back-strengthening poses -- areas of my body that need its
nurturing attention. Once involved in the practice, I became aware
of the delightful meditative and contemplative quality of the slow,
deep movements, which speak to my soul as much as to my body. It is
my priviledge and pleasure to be a yin yoga instructor, and offer
this beautiful practice to my students.

Jean Friendly Larkspur, California
Jean Friendly has been practicing meditation and energy work since 1991. Since 2001, her active asana practice
has been based on Ashtanga, as taught by John Berlinsky and Lea Watkins, and it has been complemented with a
Yin path, introduced to her by Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley. Since completing her yoga teacher training
with Sarah and Paul, Jean has continued her studies with many distinguished teachers, most notable being
Ashtanga founder, Pattabhi Jois, Iyengar masters Ramanand Patel and Kofi Busia, and spiritual teacher Adyashanti.
Jean's teaching style synthesizes all these influences – bringing awareness of energetic flow and core grounding
to expand a student’s sense of physical presence in each moment. Each class is an invitation to remember. An

Scott Miller Riverside, California
Scott Miller began practicing yoga from a book at age twelve. Along with asana and meditation instruction, the
book Be Here Now included the teachings of Neem Korali Baba. His message about experiencing life as a loving,
present moment engagement is what continues to inspire Scott to this day. It was the inspiration behind opening
Inland Yoga Centers, and it continues to inform his personal yoga practices. The physical aspect of Scott's
practice, however, is also heavily influenced by two opposite styles:
Having connected with "Ashtanga" master Pattabhi Jois in the early Nineties, Scott later traveled to India
in order to receive more instructions from him, and though Scott teaches Ashtanga in a Neem Korali inspired,
Be Here Now, manner, he continues to honor the sequencing taught to him by Mr. Jois. But Scott also balances
the "yang" half of his personal practice, with a "yin" style yoga that he learned from Paul Grilley, and his
teacher Paulie Zink. Called "Taoist Yoga," this style connects perfectly with the Be Here Now approach, and
the connection is what inspired Scott to begin practicing and later teaching "Slow Deep Stretch." Plus, it is
these two yin and yang yogas that became the hallmark of Inland Yoga, and while the studio is now able to
offer other wonderful styles, we continue to be all about present moment balancing.

Sarah Powers San Francisco, California
Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga and Buddhism into an
integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of long held
poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with a flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga,
Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachers.
Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning
to open to our emotional blockages is paramount for preparing us to deepen and nourish insights into our
essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as
well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. She teaches
trainings and silent retreats internationally with her husband Ty. They live with their teen-age daughter

He went through Paul Grilley's Teacher training, which included Yin Yoga and Anatomy for Yoga. Although he
practices both Yin and Yang (Vinyasa flow) styles of yoga, he especially likes to teach Yin yoga because the

Chuck Frenkel, RYT Northfield (Chicago), Illinois
Chuck has studied Yin Yoga with Paul & Suzee Grilley and Paulie Zink. Chuck brings to his classes a feeling of spaciousness and lightness
and offers the student the time to fully explore the inward journey during asana practice. He endeavors to uplift, inspire, and bring joy
to the yoga experience. Chuck's background as an athlete brought him into contact with yoga a number of times during his life –
as an Olympic style archery competitor and as a competitive cyclist. But he truly opened and committed fully to the practice in order
to help rehab from a serious cycling accident. Not only did yoga "bring him back" from a broken body, but also helped to heal his mind
and spirit.
For Chuck, the inward journey during asana practice is a beautiful meditation which brings him fully into the here and now,
accepting the present and all that it offers. Yoga is now a calling for Chuck and the more he practices the more he grows to
love and embrace it.

Carol Reinhard Des Moines
I am a 200 hour RYT, finishing my training the summer of 2009. I have practiced yoga for 4 years and yin for a year using
Paul Grilley's videos and other sources to learn about yin including practice with a yin teacher. I am a retired school
teacher-librarian who obviously loves to read, in addition to biking, exercising and traveling. I am also available
for private or corporate instruction
I emphasizes both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice, beginning with centering and ending with savansana
each with an inspiring quotation. I discovered yoga in the fall of 2005 as I was rediscovering my own body and its workings.
Yoga covers so much of what we all need in today's hectic world: flexibility, strength, and stress reduction allowing practitioners
to begin to discover their inner strengths and truth. As a retired teacher, I find yoga a way to stay involved, excited about and
contributing to my community.

Mary St. Onge Des Moines
After 25 years in Corporate America, I attended a yoga class in an effort to reduce job related stress From the first class, I felt like
I was "home". The classes not only reduced my stress level, but also changed how I breathed and provided a window in which to view how I was
living my life and how I could live it more mindfully and healthfully. I knew that I wanted to share what I was experiencing through the study
of yoga.
I received yoga teacher certification in Colorado in 2004. After teaching there for a year, I moved to Des Moines and began teaching at
Fitness by Design in the fall/winter months and my Minnesota studio, Twin Pines Yoga in the summer. I studied therapeutic yoga at White
Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara in 2007 and received my 500 hour yoga teacher and 300 hour yoga therapy certification from Ananda Seva in
Santa Rosa, CA in 2009. My teaching style is healing and nurturing and the Yin Yoga practice informed by Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers allows for a contemplative,
surrendering practice designed to release connective tissue and support joints, energy channels, immune system and emotional well-being.

Jan Byrd Lexington, Kentucky
It is a great joy and honor to bring yoga to those who would not necessarily believe they could participate in this
practice, and watch the transformation that takes place in their lives, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Making yoga adaptable to every level of ability is what most inspires my teaching. A member of the “baby boomer”
generation, I am excited about sharing my passion for yoga with beginner yogis and yoginis, as well as those who
have an established practice, and especially the 50+ generation. It is not simply desirable to live a healthy,
dynamic and creative life . . . it is realistically attainable through the practice of yoga.
After completing a 200-hour teacher training program, I was certified by The Temple of Kriya Yoga to teach
yoga, and am registered with Yoga Alliance as a registered yoga teacher.

Josh Summers Boston
Josh began studying Yin Yoga in the late nineties after a long training in Iyengar yoga. He is grateful
to his teachers James Murphy, Patricia Walden, Sarah Powers, Sayadaw U Pandita and Ajahn Amaro. As his
interest in vipassana, or insight meditation, has deepened, so too has his interest in more contemplative
forms of asana practice. With a professional background as an acupuncturist and a personal passion for the
dharma, Josh fell in love with Yin Yoga as a beautiful synthesis of the two.

Chris Warner (M. Ed., CYT) Boxford, Massachusetts
Chris has been practicing yoga and meditation since the mid-nineties, and was introduced to
Yin Yoga in 1999, by her first yoga teacher, Janine Grillo-Marra. In 2007, she began teaching, having been inspired
to do so by the recovery of her husband, Mike Maguire, from 3 strokes and brain surgery. She and Mike both know that
it was through dedication to the practice of Yin and Mindfulness that he was able to heal, and regain his health-physically,
mentally, and spiritually. Thus, Chris founded the studio now known as Santi Yoga, located on the North Shore of Boston
in the small town of Boxford, Massachusetts, a space dedicated to sharing the benefits of the practice with students,
with the community, and with the world.
Chris is particularly grateful to her teachers, Sarah Powers and Paulie Zink,
without whom her love of Yin Yoga, and her dedication to the Dharma would not exist. Chris is also grateful to
Thich Nhat Hanh, for his inspirational teachings and gentle spirit. Chris now teaches Yin Yoga, Mindfulness
Meditation, and Mindful Flow Yoga (a practice combining elements of Yin and Vinyasa flow with Buddhist wisdom
and meditation), as well as workshops, retreats, and Chakra balancing, always, still, remaining a student
herself, cultivating a beginner's mind. Chris dedicates any merit arising from her efforts to the benefit
to all living beings, that all may feel peaceful, happy, and free from suffering.

Lynn Kingston Northampton, Massachusetts
Lynn has been teaching yoga for over 40 years. She has taught in various locations throughout the US as well as in
Europe. Lynn came to yoga through a background in Modern dance, having studied with the pioneers of the modern dance
movement: Martha Graham, Lucas Hoving and Isadora Duncan to name a few. Throughout her 40-some years of teaching,
she has studied just about every variety and school that exists - Iyengar to Kundalini. After teaching a unique,
choreographed type of vinyasa for much of her career, it all changed when she took a workshop with Sarah Powers
in 2001. For many years, Lynn had been intuitively been practicing stretches with long, relaxed holds. As always,
her body held the wisdom before there were words for it. Since then, Lynn has exclusively taught Yin Yoga, again,
with her own unique touch, combining the held poses with her articulate wisdom and sound healing practice.

Nancy Gurney Ann Arbor, Michigan
Nancy gravitated to practicing yoga in 1994. Since then, she realized the gifts in what it truly meant to "live yoga"
in the deepest sense so she naturally surrendered her life to serve a higher purpose. In doing so, her path led her
to become an RYT 200 certified yoga instructor from Michigan 's Rising Sun Yoga in 2003. Nancy has a gift in teaching
deeply restorative yoga classes based on the Buddhist wisdom of Tara Brach and most recently in teaching Yin Yoga
based on the wisdom of Bernie Clark.
Yoga on-and-off the mat for Nancy includes: breathwork, activism, scripture reading, meditation, chanting, asana,
relaxation techniques, and ancient-to-modern day yogic cleansing rituals. Her cleansing rituals led her to open
her own colon hydrotherapy business called Creative Lifeflow. In addition, Nancy is a Writer, Visionary, and a Raw
Food Chef through Alissa Cohen's Living on Live Food Certification Program. A graduate in Health and Healing through

while also exploring or rediscovering one's authenticity. She encourages her students to share their

and learning to deal with fear and daily struggle without anxiety...and most importantly, cultivating
your practice to being a positive influence in your life and other peoples' lives every day.
Lisa is teaching yin classes at Triangle Yoga in Chapel Hill, North Carolina Sundays 6-7:30,

Joe Furman Chapel Hill, North Carolina
I started studying yoga in New York City in 1976 and I'm certified as an interdisciplinary yoga teacher.
After being introduced to yoga, I quickly learned that the practice is a personal reflection of the inner-self,
filled with energy, radiance and grace. In my teachings, I like to encourage others to project their inner-selves;
to be a calm river flowing through mountains, a sun-star bringing color to darkness, an eagle soaring smoothly
over ocean winds. Yoga helps us bring balance to the yin and yang energies of the universe and I'm honored to
help others bring this balance into their lives.

Daniel Shankin Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Daniel’s yoga resonates through the entire being of the practitioner. A fascinating, miraculous blend
of mysticism, devotion, fluid movement, and grounded shape, this yoga has the ability to appropriately
challenge any level of practitioner in a myriad of ways. His classes dedicate practices which allow one
to learn how to climb into the body, to be in the body, to compassionately embrace places of limitation,
and to celebrate places of spaciousness and vibrancy. Eschewing dogma, Daniel offers myth, poetry,
and simple principles discovered by ancient yogis so his students can explore the depths of their own
minds, and be guided, rather than force fed as they open toward deeper meaning. His teachers both too
numerous and too mysterious to name, Daniel recognizes he would have not had the opportunity to meet
any of them had it not been for the kindness extended to him by the parents who gave him birth. He
divides his time between teaching, directing Main Line Yoga School in Ardmore, Pa, practicing
Thai Massage, sitting on his mat, and opening his hips really, really wide.

Corina Benner Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Corina Benner, took her first yoga class in 1992 (although she spent much of her childhood standing on her head!), and has been
teaching yoga since 1999. Viewing asana practice as an entry-point to self-study, Corina weaves the ancient tenets of yoga philosophy
into her teaching, inspiring students to discover how this ancient practice remains relevant today in their own lives both on and off
the mat. Her positive vibrations and contagious optimism empower students of all levels to practice with enthusiasm, while her detailed
instruction and intelligent sequencing create a safe space for students to explore the landscapes of their body, mind, heart and soul.
Certified to teach by Cyndi Lee at OM Yoga Center in NYC, Corina has been strongly influenced by the precision of Rodney Yee’s teaching,
the inspiration and heart-centeredness of Shiva Rea, and the profound importance of the bones and breath taught by Paul Grilley.

MaryAnne Hägglund Richmond & Manakin-Sabot, Virginia
MaryAnne believes the practice of yoga has expanded her life in ways she never imagined. She completed the first
Yoga Source Teacher Training Program (Richmond, VA) in 2003 under the direction of Sandra Pleasants and Jennifer
Elliott and is certified with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level. After studying the more Yang styles of yoga
(Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar) she was drawn to the Yin style because of its simple yet sophisticated nature and its
ability to compliment and balance our masculine and feminine sides. She is grateful to have attended workshops
presented by Sarah Powers and Paul Grilley.
MaryAnne brings humor and compassion to her classes and feels that the "real" yoga happens once we step off
the mat and into our daily lives. She incorporates Taoist, Zen and Buddhist wisdom via poetry, prose and
quiet space into her teaching style. Her hope is to inspire those who practice with her to move through the
world with an awareness that leaves it better than the way we found it. "Everything we do is sacred."

Natalie Schimick Richmond, Virginia
Natalie’s passion for yoga was born out of a desire to learn and to understand how to utilize the physical body to improve
one’s overall health and well being. Her background and experience as a certified fitness instructor provided the groundwork
for her inquiry into yoga. Having practiced yoga for over
ten years, Natalie earned her 200-hour Yoga Alliance certification through Alignment Yoga in Madison, Wisconsin and will complete
her 500-hour training in October, 2010. Understanding that every body is unique, Natalie focuses on the internal workings of the
body through a grounded approach, letting the breath and the body’s intuitive nature be the guide.
Inquisition into a balanced mind-body led Natalie towards the practice of Yin Yoga . Natalie has considerable training and experience
practicing and teaching Yin Yoga having studied with both Paul Grilley and extensively with Sarah Powers.

Peter Marnocha Madison
I am a continuing student and teacher of Yoga. My Yoga teaching and practice is heavily influenced by the Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras
of Patanjali, and The Hatha Yoga Pradipika. I strive to practice, teach, and live inspired by the eight limbs of classical, or Raja Yoga
and other spiritual paths.
In addition to teaching and practicing traditional Hatha Yoga, I teach a "YinFusion Yoga" class heavily influenced by Paul Grilley and Sarah
Powers. This practice is primarily Yin Yoga with a blending of Yang postures and concepts.

Karen Jefson Milwaukee
I have been studying yoga since 1997 and began teaching in 2004 after receiving certification (RYT-200)
through Alignment Yoga. I came to yoga as a means of exercise, to reap the benefits of strengthening and
toning my body. And while I did experience and appreciate those benefits, I soon realized that for me
yoga went far beyond the physical practice. Over the years my practice has evolved and helped me through
many life changes. I struggled with developing my meditation practice until practicing Yin. Yin has
infused clarity and calmness into my daily life.
I offer group classes, private lessons, therapy yoga, and workplace yoga. I also teach yoga as a
therapeutic approach for children with special needs, such as autism, down symdrome, or learning
disabilities. I teach at several locations in the Milwaukee area. My class offerings and schedule
can be found on my website.
