Betsy Andrade Betsy Andrade    Chandler, Arizona

I was first introduced to the practice of Yin Yoga in 2001 when attending a workshop on yin yoga with Jeff Martens. The following year I met Paul Grilley through the Yoga Vision Conference in Tempe, and have attended a workshop with Paul at every opportunity since that time. I have been fortunate that my studio has offered a variety of yin yoga classes since that initial introduction in 2001, and I have studied consistently with Kat Myers, Aaron Goldberg and Jeff Martens throughout that time. In 2004 I was offered the opportunity to begin teaching yin yoga classes at Inner Vision Yoga in Chandler, Arizona.

The practice of yin yoga drew me in with its wonderful hip-opening and lower back-strengthening poses -- areas of my body that need its nurturing attention. Once involved in the practice, I became aware of the delightful meditative and contemplative quality of the slow, deep movements, which speak to my soul as much as to my body. It is my priviledge and pleasure to be a yin yoga instructor, and offer this beautiful practice to my students.

Laura Jean Hahn Laura Jean Hahn     Brisbane, California

I study yoga through the teacher training programs of the Integral Yoga Institute in San Francisco. I instruct Hatha and Yin Yoga. I also practice Bikram yoga, and about four years into my practice of Bikram I discovered Yin Yoga. What impressed me the most about practicing Yin was how it opened my body up and complemented my Bikram practice so beautifully and how much longer I could sit in meditation!

In January 2011 I completed a Yin Yoga Teacher Training, taught by Paul Grilley. I instruct Yin Yoga whenever and wherever the opportunity to do so arises! I am very faithful to this practice and all the amazing benefits it has to offer, and I instruct a very traditional Yin yoga class. The teachers I choose to learn from and bring their teachings into my class are Paul Grilley, Sarah Powers, and Bernie Clark.

Barbara Ginsberg Barbara Ginsberg    Petaluma

Barbara Ginsberg has been a yoga enthusiast since a teenager of the 1970s. She studied on/off for years with various Kripalu teachers, finally re-committing herself firmly to yoga practice in 2007. Besides 200 RYT at Yoga One, she is certified to teach yoga nidra from Dr Marc Halpern and Yin yoga from Sarah Powers. She arrived at Yin in a unique way. In 2010, an intuitive acupuncturist said she needed more “Yin”. During her first Yin class, she learned how stillness and receptivity were missing from her practice. Yin yoga felt comfortable, reminiscent of early Kripalu ashrams. Now as a teacher, Barbara most enjoys witnessing soft "wow" smiles on students' faces that arise from quiet practices. A toy sales rep by day, Barbara sees yoga as a deeper form of play where curiosity is the key to step back into our bodies and regain a sense of wonder.

The physical aspect of Scott's practice, however, is also heavily influenced by two opposite styles:

Having connected with "Ashtanga" master Pattabhi Jois in the early Nineties, Scott later traveled to India in order to receive more instructions from him, and though Scott teaches Ashtanga in a Neem Korali inspired, Be Here Now, manner, he continues to honor the sequencing taught to him by Mr. Jois. But Scott also balances the "yang" half of his personal practice, with a "yin" style yoga that he learned from Paul Grilley, and his teacher Paulie Zink. Called "Taoist Yoga," this style connects perfectly with the Be Here Now approach, and the connection is what inspired Scott to begin practicing and later teaching "Slow Deep Stretch." Plus, it is these two yin and yang yogas that became the hallmark of Inland Yoga, and while the studio is now able to offer other wonderful styles, we continue to be all about present moment balancing.

Tina Foster Tina Foster    San Francisco, California

My classes are warm and mindful. My exploration of the overall yogic tradition is multi-faceted and progressive. My voice is often characterized as poetic, lucid and down-to-earth. I see my interactions with other practitioners as co-creations and co-productions. My teaching of yin yoga originated from the challenge I experienced while learning to ground and meditate. I'm guided by the idea that we practice effortlessly opening and toning our bodies, but also mining for our inner gold and polishing the lens through which we view our life.

I was introduced to Yin by my first teacher during the eighties in Athens, GA. She called yin poses "ragdoll shapes." My own practice is now a primary influence and laboratory. Studies with Sarah Powers and Erich Schiffmann have especially illuminated my particular yin pathway and have provided infinitely valuable tools. Yet, every teacher and every unique approach I've embraced throughout the years has somehow inspired my Yin teaching.

Jen began teaching yoga in Tucson, Arizona in 2007. She completed an Anusara Yoga Immersion and Teacher Training with Darren Rhodes, as well as another highly empowering teacher-training which taught Jen that "yoga is to be adapted to the body - not the other way around."

Jen was drawn through meditation practice to learn the anatomy of the subtle body. A Yin Yoga teacher-training with Joe Barnett and Michelle Marks of Tucson Yoga gave her a closer look at the subtle energies at work during asana practice. She moved to Denver in 2011, and gained her 200-hour RYT certificate through a karma yoga scholarship at Core Power Yoga. Jen's classes are inspired by her many teachers, (aka "students!") and her belief that "health" means nourishing the spirit, the body, and the connections between them. Tammy's approach is with the structural differences being the most important aspect of each asana - if one feels compression while in the pose, adjust to move away from the compression in order to be safe. She guides her students to have no judgement - continually reminding them that no two bodies will look the same in the poses. Tammy loves how Yin Yoga can help her students get into a deeper Triangle pose, but it is so much more to her than that. Her mother, sister and niece all have Lupus, which brings an awareness to her teaching regarding arthritis, and the extreme benefits Yin Yoga has to the joint's health, especially when a disease is present.

Tammy holds 3 weekly Yin Yoga classes and also teaches Yin Workshops for yoga students and Yin Yoga teachers.

I have been studying and practicing yoga for 20 years. I have been teaching since 1999. Originally I came to yoga because of back pain, and having a medical background, I was interested in the physical benefits. After years of practice I decided to share yoga with others, becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher. In my personal journey I was drawn to the more meditative side of yoga, and discovered Yin. I have now been teaching yin along with more yang styles since 2002. I have studied with Paul and Suzee Grilly as well as Sarah Powers. I received my 200 and 500 hr YTT certification in the Kripalu tradition from Discovery Yoga, St. Augustine, FL, and have been teaching since 2002. I love the Yin practice because it is the perfect antidote and balance to our yang-like lifestyle and the chaotic society in which we live. Watching the transformation in students as they discover the benefits of this quiet, meditative practice is rewarding. Having initially studied Yin Yoga with Sarah Powers, I have continued my studies with Paul Grilley and follow Bernie Clark’s in depth teachings. My passion for Yin Yoga has led me to create and present workshops on Yin Yoga to teachers and yoga practitioners. It is an honor to share Yin Yoga. Chuck Frenkel RYT    Chicago - Northfield

Chuck has studied Yin Yoga with Paul & Suzee Grilley and Paulie Zink. Chuck brings to his classes a feeling of spaciousness and lightness and offers the student the time to fully explore the inward journey during asana practice. He endeavors to uplift, inspire, and bring joy to the yoga experience. Chuck's background as an athlete brought him into contact with yoga a number of times during his life ? as an Olympic style archery competitor and as a competitive cyclist. But he truly opened and committed fully to the practice in order to help rehab from a serious cycling accident. Not only did yoga "bring him back" from a broken body, but also helped to heal his mind and spirit.

For Chuck, the inward journey during asana practice is a beautiful meditation which brings him fully into the here and now, accepting the present and all that it offers. Yoga is now a calling for Chuck and the more he practices the more he grows to love and embrace it.

I am a 200 hour RYT, finishing my training the summer of 2009. I have practiced yoga for 4 years and yin for a year using Paul Grilley's videos and other sources to learn about yin including practice with a yin teacher. I am a retired school teacher-librarian who obviously loves to read, in addition to biking, exercising and traveling. I am also available for private or corporate instruction

I emphasizes both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga practice, beginning with centering and ending with savansana each with an inspiring quotation. I discovered yoga in the fall of 2005 as I was rediscovering my own body and its workings. Yoga covers so much of what we all need in today's hectic world: flexibility, strength, and stress reduction allowing practitioners to begin to discover their inner strengths and truth. As a retired teacher, I find yoga a way to stay involved, excited about and contributing to my community.

After 25 years in Corporate America, I attended a yoga class in an effort to reduce job related stress From the first class, I felt like I was "home". The classes not only reduced my stress level, but also changed how I breathed and provided a window in which to view how I was living my life and how I could live it more mindfully and healthfully. I knew that I wanted to share what I was experiencing through the study of yoga.

I received yoga teacher certification in Colorado in 2004. After teaching there for a year, I moved to Des Moines and began teaching at Fitness by Design in the fall/winter months and my Minnesota studio, Twin Pines Yoga in the summer. I studied therapeutic yoga at White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara in 2007 and received my 500 hour yoga teacher and 300 hour yoga therapy certification from Ananda Seva in Santa Rosa, CA in 2009. My teaching style is healing and nurturing and the Yin Yoga practice informed by Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers allows for a contemplative, surrendering practice designed to release connective tissue and support joints, energy channels, immune system and emotional well-being.

Wendy Cook Wendy Cook    Boston, Massachusetts

Wendy fell in love with yoga during a 10-day silent Vipassana retreat in a forest monastery in Thailand in 1987. Already a teacher of Slow Flow Vinyasa since 2001, she trained in Yin with Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers in 2005. Observing that most people's nervous systems are in overdrive and depleted, she has seen the balancing and rejuvenating effects of a Yin practice. She loves introducing Yin to yogis who have only practiced yang styles of yoga. She has seen many a person squirm, look restless and confused for the first 30 minutes of class, only to be blown away by the depth of their experience by the end. Wendy shares her curiosity around many themes including anatomy, breath, mindfulness, kinesthesia etc, yet her favorite theme, is encouraging students to be their own best friend. With a nursing degree from a lifetime ago, she is also a freshly trained Alexander Technique teacher.

Chris Warner Chris Warner (M. Ed., CYT)    Boxford, Massachusetts

Chris has been practicing yoga and meditation since the mid-nineties, and was introduced to Yin Yoga in 1999, by her first yoga teacher, Janine Grillo-Marra. In 2007, she began teaching, having been inspired to do so by the recovery of her husband, Mike Maguire, from 3 strokes and brain surgery. She and Mike both know that it was through dedication to the practice of Yin and Mindfulness that he was able to heal, and regain his health-physically, mentally, and spiritually. Thus, Chris founded the studio now known as Santi Yoga, located on the North Shore of Boston in the small town of Boxford, Massachusetts, a space dedicated to sharing the benefits of the practice with students, with the community, and with the world.

Chris is particularly grateful to her teachers, Sarah Powers and Paulie Zink, without whom her love of Yin Yoga, and her dedication to the Dharma would not exist. Chris is also grateful to Thich Nhat Hanh, for his inspirational teachings and gentle spirit. Chris now teaches Yin Yoga, Mindfulness Meditation, and Mindful Flow Yoga (a practice combining elements of Yin and Vinyasa flow with Buddhist wisdom and meditation), as well as workshops, retreats, and Chakra balancing, always, still, remaining a student herself, cultivating a beginner's mind. Chris dedicates any merit arising from her efforts to the benefit to all living beings, that all may feel peaceful, happy, and free from suffering.

Lynne McCarty Lynne McCarty     Cohasset & Pembroke

Yin Yoga's introspective, meditative and receptive qualities were all that it took for Lynne to be hooked from the first class! Lynne completed Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings with Christine O'Shaunessy, Sarah Powers, and Josh Summers. She completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training with Diane Lagadec at Maha Yoga Center. She is immensely appreciative to all of her teachers for sharing their wisdom and guidance as she journeys along her Yogic path. Yin Yoga led Lynne to a deep interest in Vipassana meditation and a passion for studying and practicing the dharma, which she weaves into each class. Stressing that yoga is very personal and individual, she encourages students to listen deeply, understanding that our edges change constantly. By bringing kindness and acceptance to how things are for us in each class and developing mindfulness of body, heart, and mind, we encourage a deeper understanding and compassion for ourselves and the world around us, allowing the innate peace and wisdom within to shine!

Yin Yoga CD Review: "Yin Yoga at it?s best. After taking a few of Ken?s classes at Kripalu and loving his approach, I was thrilled to find a CD of a guided Yin Yoga class. He is so knowledgeable and explains the postures, with alternatives, very clearly. Ken?s guided breathwork through the postures are so relaxing and healing. Heidrun Jacobi Heidrun Jacobi    Melrose, Massachusetts

Heidrun came to yoga in 2002 when she tried a yoga class just because there weren't any Pilates classes offered on that particular day, and, as has happened to so many before, she was hooked immediately. Initially feeling drawn towards more athletic yoga styles, her body started signaling her at some point that it was longing for a slower, more meditative practice where poses could be held for long periods of time and really taken in. At the beginning of 2011, as part of her 200 YTT training, she attended a Yin Yoga workshop - and knew this was it! She completed a Yin Yoga teacher training with the amazing Josh Summers in May of 2011, and has since embarked on a journey to learn more about Eastern and Western views of our bodies as well as meditation.

Shelley Boa Shelley Boa    Ann Arbor, Michigan

I have been practicing yoga daily practice 2002, mostly Vinyasa and Ashtanga, and later Yin. I received my certification in Canada, in June of 2008, and began teaching at local studios there. I now teach in Ann Arbor, Saline, and the surrounding areas, both private and public classes.

I came to Yin Yoga in 2008, when I spent a weekend studying with Paul Grilley and started to appreciate the benefits and possibilities for all types of students as I started to unwind old tightness in my body. Since then I practice Yin regularly to balance my 'Yang' activities . I love teaching Yin, as students have that 'aha' moment and start to appreciate for themselves how much they needed it and didnt realize it. My students also report sleeping like babies after an evening class. I am a registered yoga instructor with Yoga Alliance, and CPR/AED certified with American Red Cross. I am continually studying and looking for ways to expand my practice not only for myself but for my clients. I have studied with internationally renowned teachers including Paul Grilley.

Shelly Shern Shelly Shern RYT    Minneapolis

Shelly's devotion to the yogic path began in 1995 after suffering a back injury. She realized profound benefits not only to the physical body but to the spiritual as well. This naturally led her to switch from "flying the friendly skies" to the more grounded calling of teaching yoga. Shelly trained at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis with Lisa Bergly in 2005-2006 and trained in Yoga Bonding Post-natal. This connection led her to the teachings of Kriya Yoga and Enoch Dasa Giri of the Temple of Kriya Yoga in Chicago.

After shelly had asked as much from her yang vinyasa practice as she could, she was drawn to the deeper, more contemplative practice of yin yoga. It is yin yoga that balances a more active yang practice and enhances our well being. In the summer of 2010, Shelly traveled to Kripalu to study Insight Yoga with Sarah Powers. This continuing study of the energy body allows Shelly to share the calming, healing effects of yin yoga with her students. Her classes are a synthesis of flowing movement, breath awareness, and still contemplation.

I provide an environment rich in opportunity for students to expand, grow, study and inquire within. I share yoga so that students can find the teacher within. My class is a slow, low pace holding poses for one to several minutes targeting the deeper structures of the body (ligaments, bones, joint spaces, etc.). Emphasis is on softening, patience, presence and inquiry. I also give hands on assistance that coordinate with the Chinese meridians that are being stretched thus deepening the experience at an energetic level. My class benefits include: greater quality of sleep, increased immunity, greater joint function, balanced energy.

It was love at first class when I entered Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre on East 24th Street in New York City in 1978. In 1979 I took my first 200 hour teachers training with Sivananda Ashram in Val Morin, Canada; took another one with a focus on Vinyasa Flow in the twenty-first century (giggle). Believing that variety is the spice of life I have studied and explored other Yoga lineages and styles; Iyengar, Jivamukti, Kundalini, Yin Yoga.... After experiencing the physical and spiritual benefits of Yin Yoga I was inspired to take the teachers training with Biff Mithoefer offered at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. Sarah Powers Sarah Powers    Westbury, NY

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga and Buddhism into an integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of long held poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with a flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachers.

Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our emotional blockages is paramount for preparing us to deepen and nourish insights into our essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. She teaches trainings and silent retreats internationally with her husband Ty. I started studying yoga in New York City in 1976 and I'm certified as an interdisciplinary yoga teacher. After being introduced to yoga, I quickly learned that the practice is a personal reflection of the inner-self, filled with energy, radiance and grace. In my teachings, I like to encourage others to project their inner-selves; to be a calm river flowing through mountains, a sun-star bringing color to darkness, an eagle soaring smoothly over ocean winds. Yoga helps us bring balance to the yin and yang energies of the universe and I'm honored to help others bring this balance into their lives.

Alexis Reale Alexis Reale     Portland, Oregon

Alexis has been dancing for 22 years and practicing yoga for 6, but it wasn't until her first yin class two years ago that she started to feel the space and awareness of her body that can only be described as a feeling of finally feeling at home in her body. Alexis never felt like she had so many options and the permission to explore in a yoga class that she knew she needed to pass this feeling onto others. Alexis also teaches bellydance and is a member of Sundari Dance Troupe.

In her class she teaches others to try and tune in, to cultivate stillness without holding and to explore and play with their edges in the poses. Props are strongly encouraged as well is the freedom to experience the pose in a new way each time.

Daniel Shankin Daniel Shankin    Ardmore, Pennsylvania

Daniel?s yoga resonates through the entire being of the practitioner. A fascinating, miraculous blend of mysticism, devotion, fluid movement, and grounded shape, this yoga has the ability to appropriately challenge any level of practitioner in a myriad of ways. His classes dedicate practices which allow one to learn how to climb into the body, to be in the body, to compassionately embrace places of limitation, and to celebrate places of spaciousness and vibrancy. Eschewing dogma, Daniel offers myth, poetry, and simple principles discovered by ancient yogis so his students can explore the depths of their own minds, and be guided, rather than force fed as they open toward deeper meaning. His teachers both too numerous and too mysterious to name, Daniel recognizes he would have not had the opportunity to meet any of them had it not been for the kindness extended to him by the parents who gave him birth. He divides his time between teaching, directing Main Line Yoga School in Ardmore, Pa, practicing Thai Massage, sitting on his mat, and opening his hips really, really wide.

I teach yin yoga as a long term healing solution to joint injuries, anxiety, trauma and tension. I incorporate somatic release for emotional memories stored in the deep tissue. Presently, my work with yin yoga involves Reiki energy in which I give short Reiki treatments while students adapt themselves to the yin shapes. I use restorative practices as an adjunct to yin postures as needed. My original teaching training began at Yoga on Main in which I trained under Shiva Das and Ed Zadlo for my 200 and 500 certification, specializing in ayurvedic therapeutics for yoga. I continued to study ayurveda for self care with Ed Zadlo. I also am certified with Street Yoga to work with homeless and traumatized youth. After less than a year into my own practice, I completed my RYT with Marianne Wells at Samasati in Costa Rica. I continued my yin teacher training at the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina, and have been teaching Yin Yoga classes since the fall of 2009. My focus is on relaxing the body and mind while bringing out a more peaceful and balanced state of mind. I love the therapeutic side of yoga and will often focus on specific areas of the body, frequently at the request of my students. All body types are successful in these classes and I strive to ensure that all students leave feeling relaxed, restored, and renewed.

A little bit about me. I began my own personal yoga practice in the late 90's and now have completed my 200 hour RYT and have studied with Josh Summers to complete my Yin certification. I teach Yin at Yoga Tree Plano and offer private sessions in my home studio, I am a Reiki Master and incorporate my energy work into my classes. My Yin focus is on mindfulness. Yin Yoga is a complementary yoga practice to the more dynamic and invigorating yoga styles. In Yin Yoga, floor postures are held passively for several minutes to access a safe and positive 'stress' on the deep layers of connective tissue. Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints, primarily between the navel and the knees. Energetically, Yin Yoga opens the body's meridian system. This practice emphasizes stillness and silence and prepares the body and mind for meditation.

Kate Deriso Kate Deriso ERYT    Sterling, Virginia

I teach private yoga classes for 1-3 students at my office in Sterling and teach a larger group yin class at Beloved Yoga in Great Falls, VA. My love for yoga comes from a a deep desire and passion to facilitate the body's innate ability to heal itself. The yoga of my personal life began to bleed into my professional life when I was working at a Rehab Hospital as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. I found myself using yoga with my patients in one way or another, every day. This led me to become a yoga instructor and I have been teaching since 2000.

My trainings and teachers include Liz Koch of Core Awareness, Max Strom, Paulie Zink, Joe Barnett (Senior Teacher with Paul Grilley), Baron Baptiste, and Shiva Rae.

Amber Shakti Amber Shakti    Sterling & Ashburn

Ongoing and intense study of anatomy, kinesiology, neuroscience, and relaxation techniques keep Amber Shakti inspired. 6500 hours of teaching experience provided a background for her to branch out into Yin Yoga in 2008. People were stressed. With an intense passion for neuroscience, Amber began to create environments and used the Yin platform of deep stretching to combine, Gentle, Yin and some restorative poses, all designed to address the Parasympathetic Nervous System, the rest, digest and repair neurology of the human body. Classes were upwards of 70 people and had a waiting list. Amber realized and identified the need for a quieter practice. She is well known throughout the Northern Virginia area for her teaching style of Yin Yoga. In 2013, she designed and developed her own Yin Yoga (Yinoga) teacher training program.

Melissa Hunter Melissa Hunter    Virginia Beach

While a student at Virginia Wesleyan College I was introduced to Integral Yoga in 1994. It was during those first yoga classes in 1994, that I knew my heart had found a home. After graduation I went on to be certified at Kripalu Yoga Center in Chakra Yoga by Todd Norian and to travel the country attending various workshops, gratefully learning the style of Yin Yoga from Sarah Powers in 2000. I am now honored to be a part of renowned Master Yoga Teacher Rolf Gates 500 Advanced Yoga Teacher's Training Program. I now teach Yin and Vinyasa Yoga classes at Oceanfront Yoga in Virginia Beach, believing the marriage of Yin and Vinyasa styles honors the mind and body in the most complete way.

Loving yoga since 1994 and blessed to teach since 1999, I know it is a sacred honor to share this path with others and believe we do our best when we bring our own truth and essence to our mats. My mission is to simply help others shine and become their own teachers by helping others to live and embrace their truth and beauty.

I'm a motorcycle riding yogini that has been dabbling in yoga before I realized it was called "yoga." I began my first yoga teacher training in 2009 to be able to share the transformation that was happening within me with others. I have learned that our greatest teacher is within but in order to hear the teacher within us, we have to learn how to be still and listen. I teach Vinyasa and Yin Yoga. The two dovetail perfectly with each other as both are needed for a complete practice. In my classes you can expect to be challenged and nurtured, sweat and take rest, and learn to find your inner voice and strength. I teach from the heart because that is where yoga resides. Karen Jefson Karen Jefson    Milwaukee

I have been studying yoga since 1997 and began teaching in 2004 after receiving certification (RYT-200) through Alignment Yoga. I came to yoga as a means of exercise, to reap the benefits of strengthening and toning my body. And while I did experience and appreciate those benefits, I soon realized that for me yoga went far beyond the physical practice. Over the years my practice has evolved and helped me through many life changes. I struggled with developing my meditation practice until practicing Yin. Yin has infused clarity and calmness into my daily life. I offer group classes, private lessons, therapy yoga, and workshops at several locations in the Waukesha and Pewaukee area.
