The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga is an in-depth look at the practice and benefits of Yin Yoga. All forms of yoga can provide benefits physically, emotionally, and mentally and Yin Yoga is similar, however Yin Yoga works the deeper levels of the body/heart/mind: the connective tissues of the ligaments, fascia, joints and bones and the energetic channels of the meridians, nerves and blood system. One big difference noticed by students of Yin Yoga is the long held, passive nature of the posture, which gives time for a deeper journey to unfold, a journey into the meditative aspects of yoga, a bridge to living life mindfully.

Inside The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga readers will find complete information on how to do the practice, including a deep look inside over two dozen Yin Yoga postures showing the benefit of the pose, how to get into and out of the pose, contraindications and warnings for those who may have trouble with particular aspects of the posture and other important information. Classes, or flows, are also provided that target specific areas of the body such as the hips, the lower back, the legs and the upper body as well as flows that help stimulate particular organs and energy centers.

As important as how to practice Yin Yoga, are the benefits: the reader will find lots of information about why anyone would want to practice Yin Yoga. The benefits are explored in three main sections: the physiological benefits, the energetic benefits and the mental/emotional benefits. Within each section the philosophies of the East (India and China) are contrasted with the current science in the West.

The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga is an extension of a previous book written by Bernie Clark entitled YinSights, The Philosophy & Practice of Yin Yoga. There are many similarities between the two books and several significant differences. YinSights included an overview of the philosophies and histories of many different branches of yoga and Eastern philosophies, including Samkhya, classical Yoga, Tantra Yoga and Hatha Yoga. These sections are not repeated in The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga. What is new is added materials for each of the Yin Yoga asanas, more detailed investigations of the benefits of the practice and the addition of more postures, especially for other areas of the body beyond the hips and spine.

YinSights included an investigation into the yin aspects of more active yoga practices, such as vinyasas and sun salutations and offered quieter versions. These are not repeated in The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga. The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga offers more information on how to use Yin Yoga in special situations that was not available in YinSights, such as what to do if you have trouble with your knees, hips, lower back, want to become pregnant or are already pregnant.

In many respects The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga is a second edition of YinSights, however to make the book more manageable in size, much of the philosophical and non-Yin Yoga related sections have been dropped. What remained was expanded and enhanced, focusing on the Yin Yoga style of practice. The new book is a much more complete guide to Yin Yoga. Hopefully previous readers will enjoy The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga as much as they did YinSights and that new readers will be inspired to take a walk on the yin-side. After all, yin is in!
